*Renew * Rebuild * Revamp* Redo*

With a few thrift store treasures and some basic sewing skills, you can create original one of a kind additions to your wardrobe, unique gifts, beautiful handbags, adorable hats or anything else that tickles your fancy.
I love hitting up my local thrift stores looking for treasures. They are fun to explore and often help spawn new ideas and inspiration for projects. Reusing once loved goods is one more way to help our planet stay clean. When thrifting always make sure to bring along a friend, the more eyes the merrier!

Baby Clothes

You would think that having 4 kids, I would be sewing up a storm of kids clothing. Really, who has the time for all of that. I had 3 boys first and other than making costumes for them, I never really made any little boy clothes. However the tables are turned now and I have a baby girl. I am more inspired to make cute little outfits for her because I don't have to mess with legs/pants. My sister and I found out we were both pregnant within a week of each other so I made up little kimono style dresses for our babies because she too was having a girl.

The dresses with the orange trim/dragon fabric and the red trim/cherries were for the babies. They were easy to make once I figured out how to draft the pattern. The nice thing about this design is that as the babies grow, they can continue to wear garment as a top with some cute leggings.

The kimono at the top with the multi-color print and black and white stripe is reversible and made for a larger size. I love how the stripes compliment the color on the reverse side. The color print is made from a lightweight corduroy and the striped fabric is an old cotton fitted bed sheet that belonged to my kids. I became irritated with the sheet when the corners no longer stayed put so I figured it was time to do something else with it. This turned out to be a great design and is perfect for that one of a kind baby shower gift.

Voodoo Doll Halloween Costume 2011

This was my Halloween costume this past October. I designed the pattern for the dress then used a thrift store shirt for the sleeves and a black lacy thrift store skirt for the underskirt. It is a little unfinished in these pictures because the pins in the heart are missing the ball tops. But as soon as I dig up the pictures from the party we went to, I will add them so you can see the garment in its completed stage.

Medium size owl bag

This is my latest bag made for a friend. I absolutely love the fabric with mish-mash of circles.

Latest Bags

I decided to add some squirrels and stars to my bags and made a new batch over the last few months. Having 4 kids leaves me with little time to do anything so I am happy I was able to knock these out.
I have also been working on hats and little baby kimono style dresses.

More t-shirt fun!

I love this top! I collected many old t-shirts from friends and family and cut them into random size squares. I used my serger to sew it all together and draped it on my dress form along the way. I was pregnant with my 3rd son when I made it so it was made to grow with me. I added a hand appliqued muffin to complete the home-baked look to symbolize that both the top and the baby were created while I was living in MI and attending college in Detroit.

Camo makeover

This skirt was made from an old pair of camo shorts that were free to me and didn't fit in the waist at all!! I cut off the top waistband of the shorts and added a new waist from an old black t-shirt. Once you remove the crotch seam you have a skirt! I left the slit open on the front and back to give more leg room but you can close the seams if you wish. Adding the knit waistband allows for more ease and gives the skirt more room to easily slide on.

Red Top Makeover

Here is a before and after picture of a shirt that I altered. I took a red t-shirt and combined it with the patterned top to create a wrap style top which gives it a little more curve hugging shape.

OWL BAGS

Time seems to go by faster and faster these days!! My sewing machine stopped working and needed to go into the shop which I thought was going to put a halt to my sewing, but thanks to a very gracious friend I was able to continue my projects with the use of her machine!!! Thank you L!!!

So I have been working on completing my recycled owl bags to add to my collection. I occasionally work craft fairs and decided that I needed more owl bags so here they are.
They are made from upholstery samples, which were destined for the trash. I'm also planning on new designs with squirrel appliques!! Once I get my machine back from the shop, I will get started on those.

Costumes

OK, so these are some costumes I have made but not from recycled materials.

Several years ago I was into belly dancing and thus made all of my dance outfits. Not all of them are here but I will eventually get around to posting the rest of them as I go through my photo collection.

This silver belt shows the front view on the left and the back view on the right. It was all hand beaded and has a matching bra top, alas I need to get a picture of it still.

This was a Halloween costume I made for myself (Little Red Riding Hood)

Home Grown Handbags

As a side project I reclaim upholstery samples that are destined for the dump to create these one of a kind recycled handbags.
